Testimonials
"Into the wilderness was the best Lenten faith building spiritual exercise I have done. I had done exodus 90 for the past 4 years and I feel like this was a lot better. The 0 calorie fasting and identity building were huge for me"
Francesco 27, PA
Testimonials
"I had my doubts about joining Into the Wilderness, mostly because of past experiences with bible studies and such that just seemed to fizzle out. Into the Wilderness was a highly engaging exercise of faith, introspection and perseverance that kept me focused and wanting more. I learned a lot and am very grateful that I was asked to participate."
Jeremy 48, MN
Testimonials
"ITW was great! It was a great way to be very intentional with Lent and to be both built up and challenged by other men who are striving to live their lives for Christ. ITW really convicted me that prayer becomes so much more fruitful when paired with real self-sacrifice and fasting--I definitely want to fast more even outside of Lent now because of it. I also found it more spiritually edifying than Exodus 90 usually is for me. Highly recommend!"
Ryan 29, NE
Testimonials
"Into the Wilderness proved to be the most intentional and enlightening men's program that I have ever gone through. Matt's attention to detail and knowledge of both psychology and the spiritual life proved to be so helpful for us men as we learned about male archetypes and virtue and how we are called to embody them. I can't recommend this program enough to every Catholic man!"
Gabriel 29, OH
Testimonials
"Into the Wilderness was amazing, I’d highly recommend it to all men no matter their age, state in life, or current prayer life. There is something here for everyone that will help on the journey to authentic masculinity as sons of the Father."

Testimonials
"ITW was a very eye opening experience. It was very inconvenient to do this program and for me it's what made it so powerful. Everyday I had a tough goal to reach and a group of men to hold me accountable each step of the way. I enjoyed the challenges of being intentional with the daily scriptures and reflections along with the fasting."
Charlie 24, MI
Testimonials
"Because of the Into the Wilderness program, this was the most impactful Lent I’ve ever experienced. I learned how to more intentionally pray with the Scriptures and incorporate prayer into my daily routine. My biggest takeaway was learning all about the parts of my masculine heart and the way God invites me to live those parts out daily, especially in rediscovering the cowboy in myself."

"It was a very well done program. Matt does a great job and is very knowledgeable in all of the topics. I enjoyed the videos and readings for each week and the Lord seemed to speak through them."

Testimonials
"ITW was truly a great experience to come closer to the Father’s heart for me and to journey along with fellow brothers in Christ. The teaching is authentically Catholic and rooted in our identity as priests, prophets, and kings!"

Testimonials
"Into the wilderness was a guided experience into a more human life. A practical way to build habits of things we should be doing anyways, along with a few extra Lenten practices. The weekly pdfs and group meetings helps keep accountability and organization. I felt like I was able to deepen my relationship with God, self, and others through prayer, reflection, and detachment."

Testimonials
"Into the wilderness helped me to look at the time of lent much less as an irritating time where I have to not do something I like for a month and a half. It actually helped me realize that it is a time where I am given an opportunity to offer something more to the Lord. In the different sacrifices, fasts, and devotions that we went through, it helped me to see both my weaknesses and my strengths, to see how the Lord lives in me. And it also helped me to practice how I can live the rest of my life with Christ. There are many of the practices that we did that I will be continuing on with even after lent has ended, like a personally written covenant said every morning, a time of silent solitude per day, intermittent fasting and others as well that I can now find meaning in. To summarize I guess ITW has helped me to fall in love with my Lord, and how to live in that relationship, and I couldn’t recommend it any more."
Jacob 21, WI
Testimonials
"ITW helped me step back and appreciate the little things in life. Going for a walk, drinking coffee, talking with my wife. Eating meals. It also helped me connect with the scripture and rely on it for daily advice on how to live my life. I am a better man for having gone through the program, I feel connected with other Catholic men across the country and I would do it again."
Joe 23, TN
Testimonials
"Into the Wilderness did a great job of implementing the aesthetics of the different masculine archetypes in practical and fruitful ways. I was also impressed with the use of Scripture in relation to it better connecting us with the archetypes for each week"

Testimonials
"Into The Wilderness delivers the comradery of a men's group (however long the distance). Together navigating a structured and thoughtful program such as ITW gives a man in the modern world a place to stand, while he builds upon his Catholic identity. It gives him the opportunity to share himself, his triumphs and failings with likeminded men seeking and offering accountably, and acceptance as a man growing in Christ. It is the good exercise of the soul we seek as individuals on the same team!"

Testimonials
"ITW is a great way to structure your lent. I very much enjoyed the way each week truly built on the previous weeks and how directed the prayers and disciplines were."

Testimonials
"I would say that the ITW program feels like going with Jesus and the disciples into the wilderness to dig deep into oneself and firmly establish some serious communication with Christ. The other disciples will help you form a type of tangible camaraderie that will help keep you grounded as you dive into things with the Lord that perhaps you always subconsciously avoided or were wounded by. You are going to be cold, hungry, with no habitual distractions to escape to. In this state, you will feel the need to bare everything before God in unconditional surrender to His Will, and He will noticeably test your resolve! But at the end, it will all be so worth it, you will more clearly have a relationship with God and feel free."

Testimonials
"This program is an excellent place to begin the masculine journey as both an exploration of your own heart and a beginning to diving into fraternal intimacy. It gives a practical expression to the concept of becoming the man you want to be and ultimately becoming like Christ. I highly recommend it to any man who has an ache to discover their own heart and live their masculinity but doesn't know where to begin or how to go deeper."

Testimonials
"The main highlights of ITW for me were the meetings/calls with my hunting partner and the evening prayer and conversation with other guys in the weekly meetings. For us men to lead a holy life, we really benefit from and need accountability. Another point is that it can be easy to renounce certain bad habits/behaviors, but being completely detached is a different story and takes a lifetime of perseverance, a daily deliberate choice. The good habits that we want to practice need to be permanent, and are not guaranteed. In other words, we need to be growing, because if we are not growing, then we must be stagnating, and therefore dying."

Before you join, you probably want to know more about my experience and what my vision is.
I have experience coaching men ages 14-55, from helping them create simple habits to order their life or develop a meaningful prayer life, all the way to helping them overcome sexual and/or alcohol addictions. I have experience teaching the Catholic faith to elementary age boys all the way to men in their 70's. I have gone through several initiation programs and have spent over $1,000 on individual programs. In the past year I have taken 2 additional courses on the cardinal virtues so I am very excited for round two of Into the Wilderness.
It is my mission to bring revival to Most Holy Church and help men become men after God's own heart. I want to bring back masculine initiation in the Church to help revive a culture of virtue and prayer, authentic masculinity, revive marriages and father's relationships with their children (especially their sons), and I want to help fathers initiate their own sons.
This program is tried and true and I personally have gone through it several times, either in college with the faith household that I founded, or after with other men. I promise you that if you go through this and really give it your all, you will see real, lasting change that you can pass on to your sons, who will pass it on to their sons. Through this form of Catholic masculine initiation, revival in Catholic laity will grow, and it will begin with reviving the heart of man.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. God bless, and know of my prayers.
We live in an age of fatherlessness, and the reason is because we are no longer initiated from boys to men.
I first experienced masculine initiation when I served with NET Ministries Ireland. During training, they separated the men from the women and provided us a multiple day initiation that was life changing. There was silence, prayer, time in the woods, fasting, and "rituals" of initiation, all in the context of a group of men.
Masculine initiation is a ritualistic process in the context of a group of men undergoing the same thing, led by someone who has already gone through the process. This isn't a cringy or scandalous hazing process, but something that touches deep into the hearts of men. The reason for this is that masculinity is bestowed, not earned, just like faith is bestowed at baptism, not earned. Furthermore, just like faith, if it is not used, it is lost.
When masculine initiation was common, it marked the beginning of a way of life that continued to initiate the man. Now, not only have we lost masculine initiation, we do not live lifestyles that continue to initiate us. Even if we are initiated through some life event, if we do not initiate others we lose that which was given to us. This is because at the essence of masculinity is fatherhood.
Fatherhood pertains to generativity and belonging. The perfect father is the perfect son, hence the Trinity. When we are initiated we claim our sonship, and when we do so we claim our inheritance which is fatherhood. Not all men are biological fathers, but all men are called to fatherhood; to make more men, to protect the weak, fight for justice, and make space for others to belong.
This is at the essence of what Pope Paul VI means when he says that man "cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself" (GS 24). This process of man finding himself, I believe, is largely through masculine initiation.
While other programs may focus on changing behavior, here at Steadfast Life we focus on cultivating a new identity. Instead of doing something that happens to coincide with Lent, you will enter more fully into the Liturgical Season and experience lasting transformation like the men who have gone through this before you. Each week focuses on adopting a certain mindset and interior disposition that flows out into our habits, instead of just focusing on the behavior.
If you are looking to "put on the new man," then journey with me and your brothers into the wilderness with Christ, to the Father, through the power of the Holy Spirit, this Lent.
